An easy to use reading comprehension pack with three sections of differentiated questions. This activity focuses on the story of Guy Fawkes and the plotters, their plans and how they were caught and executed, before investigating why we don’t celebrate foiled terrorist plots today. It can be used in form time as part of literacy focus, or in an English lesson for KS3/4 GCSE comprehension training.

Travel writing is such a great way of introducing younger students to analyzing and evaluting purpose, audience, type and more. In this lesson we think about the idea of travel and the different text types that make up travel writing, plus we analyze and evaluate the different purposes, audiences and key features of texts like postcards, travel brochures, travel guides and travel journals. A fun and engaging lesson with differentiated challenges throughout.
Comparing Poppies and War Photographer isn’t an easy task, but this fully differentiated and resourced lesson looks at these two Power and Conflict poems: Poppies by Jane Weir and War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy. The lesson helps students to make comparisons between the two and approach the poems through common themes.It includes four pages of notes about how the two poems are similar around common themes, which students can use to create comparative venn diagrams.

A 20 minute Tutor Time Quiz with 4 rounds, which is interactive and runs on Powerpoint. All answers are included and there are hidden YouTube clip commiseration prizes for when you get a question wrong. The quiz can either be played having the answers revealed as you go along, or the board can be paused and the answers read out at the end (you can play either in teams or individually).
Using the controversial topic of having Christmas every day or not, students work in groups to prepare detailed arguments for one side or the other using writing to argue features. Students are guided on how to lead and be involved in a well structured debate and each person is given a specific role to ensure all students are involved and contributing to the debates. A really useful lesson for the end of the term but also helps students to develop their cohesive arguments, spoken language skills and more. Differentiated throughout.
As we finish our study of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we explore the final speeches of Theseus, Oberon, Titania and Puck and consider how the play ends as a Shakespearean comedy. We complete our story shape structure graphs and evaluate the impact of the structure of the play on the audience. Fully differentiated throughout.
As we study A Midsummer Night’s Dream we look at the play within a play in Act 5 Scene 1 and how Bottom and the mechanicals present Pyramus and Thisbe to the wedding audience. Students create their own performances of Pyramus and Thisbe before analyzing the comments made by Theseus, Hippolyta and the other characters as they watch and interrupt the actors. Fully differentiated throughout.
As students analyze Shakespeare comedy, they work in groups to create their own Shakespearean comedy - using genre conventions including themes, plot, setting, titles, types of character and more .Students are provided with detailed examples including a whole example play to help them, and detailed planning sheets so they can craft their comedies together in groups. Students then prepare and perform a scene from their own play, judging its success on class success criteria. A really engaging lesson for students of all ages. Fully differentiated throughout.
